After winning their place in the tournament by coming out on top in their own region, the athletes from Primary 5, 6 and 7 headed to Carnegie Leisure Centre last Tuesday to face some tough competition at the Fife, Kinross and Tayside Indoor Athletics Finals.
The children took part in a variety of running, jumping and throwing events, from long jump to javelin to relay, and it was the kids from Donibristle who came out on top.
Headteacher Craig Mitchell was proud of his pupils’ achievements and praised the way they took to the competition.
“It was a real team effort and everyone gave their best support to each other, that’s the way we want the kids to behave,” he said. “They were up against the best of the other authorities and they did really well, I’m very proud of them and the manner in which they did it.
“They all supported each other and enjoyed themselves. It’s good to compete but it’s also good to have a sense of fun!
“The team was made up of 30 boys and girls who attend the school’s in-house athletics club to reward them for their efforts. Following a competition in Dunfermline and West Fife, two teams went on to represent Fife in the finals against other teams from Tayside, Angus and Perth and Kinross. We were one of them as well as Dalgety Bay Primary School. It was a big competition and they did really well.” The success of the team is no surprise to Mr Mitchell, given the popularity of the club and the enthusiasm of the volunteers who help run it.
“We have 60-70 kids some evenings,” he said. “It’s very popular for the Primary 4-7s and they enjoy doing their best and bettering their times or their scores. It’s very successful.
“The club is run every week by Mr Begg who volunteers his own time to do it and also one of the parents, Mrs Ferguson, who is a real stalwart.
“It really makes a difference when the pupils get that kind of encouragement from them and without them the club would fall down.”
