A PLAQUE has been unveiled in honour of heroic West Fife firefighter Ewan Williamson who lost his life in the line of duty.
The 35-year-old, originally from Carnock, was killed after becoming trapped while tackling a pub blaze in Edinburgh on July 12, 2009.
Family, friends and colleagues were in attendance on the ninth anniversary of his death last Thursday as the plaque was revealed at Benson's Bar, Dalry Road, Gorgie.
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) organised the event and Ewan’s mother, Linda Williamson, said: “The family are all extremely proud that Ewan will be honoured and remembered by the FBU Red Plaque Scheme.
“It is a fitting tribute to the sacrifice he made to save others. We would like to thank the FBU for all the support they have given us over the years and are very grateful for the kindness and generosity. Ewan will forever be in our thoughts.”
Ewan was on annual leave as the-then Balmoral Bar went up in flames but he came in for overtime due to a staff shortage.
The Firefighters 100 Lottery funded the plaque and ceremony.
It was formed to help commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters killed and injured in the line of duty and to establish a fund for firefighters and their families.
