A CAMPAIGN has been launched to reduce the speed limit on a busy Kelty street "before there's a fatality".
The calls come after a Station Road resident awoke to a driver colliding with her parked Audi A3 car on Saturday night.
It is the second time in two years an incident like this has happened and it looks like it will be the second car Caron Hughes has had to write off as a result.
Police Scotland are investigating the collision with an eyewitness alleging that the man responsible for the crash was speeding down the road without his vehicle's lights on.
The driver fled the scene – taking the car keys – with the impact forcing Ms Hughes' car to roll several feet down the hill.
It came to a stop when it hit another parked van which sustained damage due to the impact.
Speaking to the Press, Ms Hughes said: "This is the second time this has happened in two years.
"At this time of year, after the year everyone has had, it's tough to take.
"I didn't hear the crash but my neighbour knocked on my door as it woke them up. They said the noise was like a small explosion going off.
"The driver hit the front passenger side and it's caused a lot of damage underneath to the chassis and suspension, and the police who attended on Saturday night suggested it will have to be written off.
"I only recently got it back from its MOT as well. It's gutting.
"Drivers come speeding down this road all the time and it's only a matter of time before there's a fatality.
"It's a busy road and, although it's a 30mph speed limit, I regularly see a handful of cars coming down the road at 60 and 70 each day.
"Something needs done as there's going to be a serious incident."
Local MSP Alex Rowley has backed her calls and has put pressure on Fife Council to act.
He told the Press: "There are real traffic problems on all the main arteries in and out of Kelty: Station Road, Black Road, Cocklaw Street, Main Street. Every one of them is a problem and I've raised this with local councillors and Fife Council.
"For this to happen again, it shows that action needs to be taken."
He continued: "The job of Fife Council's officials is to serve and support the communities. The communities don't exist to keep these people in a job but that's how it's starting to feel.
"When we have issues like this being repeatedly raised and repeatedly ignored, it really feels that way.
"Fife Council officials seem incapable of responding to this.
"In the case of Kelty, it should be a 20mph speed restriction. Traffic officials don't seem to be able to comprehend the concerns that exist within communities about speeding traffic.
"In the case of Kelty, one of the solutions is to introduce a 20mph speed limit for all of the village. Let's start with that and then develop a plan of how that will be policed.
"As well as speed limits, we should be putting in speed cameras and fining people for not driving at the regulated speed.
"There needs to be a serious discussion over this but Fife Council seem to have their ears closed when it comes to these issues."
Councillor Altany Craik, convener of Fife Council's economy, tourism, strategic planning and transportation sub-committee, told the Press that council officers will be collating data on whether new traffic measures are needing to be taken in Kelty.
He said: "The council takes speeding and road safety very seriously, which is why we already have in place a permanent 20mph zone on the section of Main Street outside Kelty Primary School.
"There is generally good compliance with the speed limits already in force in Kelty. However, if there is evidence to show further measures are needed then we can take that forward.
"I have therefore asked officers to collate all their data and arrange a meeting between myself, local councillors and MSPs to discuss what more we should do."
Anyone with any information regarding Saturday night's incident is asked to contact Police Scotland.
A spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a crash on Station Road in Kelty around 11.45pm on Saturday, December 5, where a car collided with a number of parked vehicles.
"The driver left the scene without leaving their details.
"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 4305 of 5 December."
