A DUNFERMLINE drink-driver attempted a U-turn on the A92 when almost four times over the limit.

Gavin Wilson, 46, of Wedderburn Street, appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted previously that on October 27, on the A92, he drove a car having consumed excess alcohol. His reading was 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit being 22 microgrammes.

He also admitted he stopped his car in the inside lane of the A92, then carried out a U-turn manoeuvre and attempted to drive off in the face of oncoming traffic.

Wilson further admitted that he ran away from the scene of a road traffic incident in an effort to avoid detection and attempted to pervert the course of justice.

Depute fiscal Mat Piskorf said that, at 3.40am, police were called to attend the A92 after a report of a driver attempting to do a U-turn.

Bear Scotland workers had also seen Wilson’s car stopped and had gone to the scene.

Wilson attempted to perform a U-turn into the path of oncoming traffic but was unable to do so because of a lack of room. He spoke to a Bear employee and then disappeared across a field.

When tracked down by police nearby, Smith said: “I was driving the car. Simple as that.”

Defence solicitor Alexander Flett said his client had been at a friend’s house drinking and had planned to stay the night there.

“He simply can’t explain why he took the decision to drive the vehicle,” he added. “He got a real fright and has not consumed alcohol since.”

Sheriff Charles Macnair told Wilson: “You’re very, very close to a custodial sentence.”

Instead, he banned him from driving for 18 months. He also imposed a community payback order with 211 hours of unpaid work.
