RACING fans can take up the "cheapest form of motorsport" and follow in the tiny tyre tracks of a world champion this Sunday.

Dunfermline Slot Car Racing Club is holding an open day and inviting anyone with a need for speed to pick up a controller and get ready to go when the chequered flag drops.

It's been going for 50 years – it's the longest established club of its kind in Scotland – and one of its proudest moments came in 2019 when Ross Grogan, who is from the town, won the world title.

Although he's now working in London for an aerospace company, his dad, who got him into slot car racing is still a member.

Asked to explain the appeal, club spokesman Patrick Skene said: “You’re racing against people, it’s very interactive.

"If you’re into motorsport, it’s the cheapest form of motorsport to get involved in.

"What really attracts me is the competition and the engineering side of it, so trying to make your car as fast as possible."

As well as Ross' world championship success, the club won several UK titles in the 1970s and 80s.

It was previously known as Ecurie Barnton and was based in Edinburgh until 2019 when it moved across the Forth to become the Dunfermline Slot Car Racing Club.

Members are hoping to make people more aware of the niche hobby which could be described as ‘extreme Scalextric’.

As well as racing, you can learn to build your own car and create your own team.

Patrick added: “Slot car racing was really at its peak during the 1960s and now it seems to be making a comeback for people wanting to try something different.

"It’s definitely a minority sport, with only about four clubs in Scotland. The beauty of getting kids involved is to get them using their hands and tools.

"There are very few places that teach kids skills like this.”

The open day this Sunday is from 11am until 3pm at 10c Canmore Street.

Cars and controllers are provided for newcomers and all ages are welcome.
