HUMBLE Matty Todd has described his latest outing in an unnatural position as “alright” but was delighted to be a goalscoring hero on Tuesday night.
The former Dunfermline High School pupil, and boyhood Pars fan, was brought back into the side for Friday’s draw with Morton, and retained his place for the win over Partick Thistle.
Deployed at right back, a role he first played in last month’s scoreless draw with Kilmarnock, Todd excelled on Tuesday night, providing the cross for former team-mate Lewis Mayo’s own goal to haul them level, before ghosting in unmarked to head home the team’s second from Dom Thomas’ cross.
That was his second goal for the club – the other came in a home defeat to Morton in November – and he was thrilled that this one helped his team to three crucial points in their bid to avoid relegation.
“Another header!” he told Press Sport afterwards.
“I’m delighted to get another goal. Playing in the full back position, it’s something that the manager wants me to do, get in at the back post. I’ve done that and I’ve got on the scoresheet.
“I’m delighted that I’ve helped contribute to the team and, thankfully, we’ve picked up the three points.
“We felt that on Friday night we should’ve won the game. We came into tonight with the same attitude and commitment.
“It’s great that we’ve went and scored four goals so I’m just delighted.”
More accustomed to playing in midfield, Todd’s inclusion on the right-hand side of the defence – ahead of Aaron Comrie, who has made the position his own since signing, and other natural defenders like Lewis McCann, Rhys Breen and Leon Jones – has perhaps taken supporters by surprise.
But Todd, who in January signed a new deal keeping him at East End until 2024, said having the confidence of manager John Hughes to play the role has been a boost.
“This is my third game (at full back) now. The first couple were shaky,” he continued.
“I thought I did alright.
“The game tonight, the manager and the coaching staff have all said just go and do your own thing and perform because you’re good enough at that position.
“I’ve gone out there tonight, tried my best and I’m happy that we’ve picked up the three points.
“I’m just thankful for the manager and everyone in the coaching team that have stuck by me.
“As I said, the role was something new to me but the last couple of games I’ve thought I’ve done alright.
“My end product could maybe be a wee bit better but we now need to focus on ourselves and get ourselves up the league.”
He added: “Hearing the boys in there, we all thought it was a matter of time before we’ve gone and beaten somebody.
“We probably should have picked up three points on Friday night but we’ve turned up tonight and we’ve certainly put on a show, picked up the three points.
“Now it’s only time to focus on ourselves, kick on and get up the league.”
