A RETIRED West Fife Queen's Nurse celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday.

Helen Condie, who is a resident at Leys Park Nursing Home, worked as a health visitor in Dalgety Bay before retiring. She worked previously as a practice nurse in Charlestown and ran the clinic at the Paper Mill in Inverkeithing.

Born in Newarthill in Lanarkshire, she was brought up in Lochore before moving to Dunfermline.

She worked initially in a Dunfermline flower shop. During the Second World War, as a staunch member of the Christian Brethren, she was a conscientious objector and was drafted into role in a Perthshire Convalescence Home looking after injured Polish airmen. From that, she trained at the West Fife Hospital before going on to become a qualified midwife and Queen's Nurse.

In retirement, she studied German language and music theory alongside the young pupils at Inverkeithing High School.

Because of a lack of mobility in her later life, Helen moved from the Brethren to the Dalgety Church of Scotland.
