A 35-YEAR-OLD man claimed he “panicked” when his estranged wife appeared and got into his parked car in Dunfermline.

Fecri Konu accelerated straight into a lamp-post at Fife Leisure Park leaving the woman injured.

Konu, of Alexander Street, Perth, appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on April 5, at Fife Retail Park, Whimbrel Place, Dunfermline, he drove a car carelessly by accelerating while his wife was not secured within the vehicle and the passenger door was ajar and caused the car to collide with a lamp-post, causing her injury.

Depute fiscal Catherine Stevenson said Konu’s wife had found out he had arranged to meet another female in Dunfermline.

She had then turned up and entered his car, accusing him of being unfaithful.

Before she had closed the passenger door and sat down properly, Konu drove straight into a lamp-post.

The woman sustained an injury to her shin and limped away from the car, added the depute.

Defence solicitor William Somerville said his client had been put on a non-harassment order preventing him from contacting his wife.

He went on: “She decided to approach his vehicle and enter it. He can only conclude she wanted to get him into further trouble.

“He panicked and wasn’t paying much attention to the road in front when he hit the lamp-post.”

Sheriff Craig McSherry imposed a fine of £420. He also endorsed Konu’s licence with three penalty points.

Konu, a Turkish barber, has a history of domestic offending against his wife.

Back in 2012, he was ordered to take part in supervision and have the “cultural norms” of the UK explained to him.

On that occasion, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said to Konu: "There are differences in cultural norms and because you are living in this country you have to accept that."
