DUNFERMLINE families are to launch a community action plan to tackle problems in Brucefield.

The Brucefield Tenants and Residents Association will unveil the plan, created in collaboration with various community groups in the area and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, next month.

One focus will be a revamp of St Leonard's park, known locally as the 'Studies', which they feel has been neglected but could be transformed into a wonderful playground that will not only keep the kids busy but provide an amazing green space for everyone to enjoy.

Kathleen Langner, secretary of the association, told the Press: "A big thing for us is the park and that is what we are going to highlight. It's in a terrible state and during lockdown our kids had nowhere to go because there are not any facilities for us.

"If you go down there and have a look yourself, it's not a good place to take your kids, you would go out your way and take them to the Glen or Public Park. It's not safe to let the kids nip over on their own because it's in dark and secluded, there is glass everywhere and it's just not fit for purpose.

"It's really frustrating, especially during lockdown where you couldn't go anywhere except out for a walk. The place was flooded so you couldn't walk through it because when there is a bit of rain it floods and because it's so dark the youths use it for hanging about and there's broken bottles."

On top of these issues, Kathleen remembers playing on the same equipment at the Studies when she was little. She believes the playground to be at least 40-years-old, making it outdated and not fit for use.

While they are still in the planning stages, the group has big plans to transform their park.

Kathleen continued: "It is a big area and there's talk that people would want to see allotments on the area, that's not one of my choices but that's been put out there. Somewhere nice to sit and some planted beds because there is a huge green area that could be used for dog-walkers or to sit and have a picnic.

"There's a lot of potential for it but, for us, if they just sorted the kids' play area then that would be a huge achievement but there's hope for other things that will benefit everybody in the community."

The community action plan will be launched at a fun day that has been organised by Kathleen and her group on Saturday, August 13 in St Leonard's park. There will be stalls giving information on the plan and the Coalfields Trust as well as inflatables, tombolas, market stalls and more.
