A VINTAGE railway poster depicting the Forth Bridge has been sold for almost £13,000 at auction.
The 1928, Henry George Gawthorn lithographic print is a bold art deco piece that stole the heart of buyers when it went to auction last Thursday, going for a whopping £12,600, making it the most expensive print sold.
The LNER commercial artist's work was the centrepiece of Lyon and Turnbull's sale of Scottish Scenes, it was expected to make £6,000-£8,000 but fetched more than double the lower estimate.
His work marked a great milestone for the construction and design of bridges in a time where rail was the best way to travel long distances.
Nicolette Tomkinson, from Tomkinson Churcher, specialist consultants to Lyon & Turnbull, said: "Yesterday’s Vintage Travel Poster auction was 90 per cent sold with enormous interest in all travel posters.
"The Scottish travel posters were particularly well received, and we were delighted with the top lot, Gawthorn’s stunning art deco image 'Over the Forth to the North' which realised £12,600."
Also up for sale was a lithographic print, 'The Fife Coast', by Frank Henry Mason. It sold for £1,638.
Other posters included in the Scottish Scenes sale showed the Trossachs, Bute and Royal Deeside.
