THERE'S an urgent call for action after two children were almost knocked down in two separate "near misses" on Carnock Main Street.

Councillor Sam Steele fears the next time, a youngster may not be so lucky, and sought backing from the South and West Fife area committee to slow traffic on both sides of the bridge, just outside the primary school.

She raised an urgent motion at the meeting last week and said: "Six weeks ago, there was a near miss when a child was nearly knocked down on Main Street and a request was put in to ask if the speed limit could be reduced from 30mph to 20mph.

"Unfortunately, it was deemed that this could not be done at the moment due to the fact there's a new national strategy planned and Fife Council is undertaking an assessment of all 30mph roads.

"The reason I brought this as an urgent motion is because there was another incident (on Friday, November 17) where a child was again nearly knocked down on Main Street."

She said the council was revising its designs for the Carnock Bridge traffic signals upgrade, after consultation with the Parent Council, which involves the relocation of bus stops and a new pedestrian crossing.

Cllr Steele continued: "I'm concerned that two near misses have now occurred where a child was nearly knocked down by vehicles on Main Street in the last six weeks."

She called for officers to "explore options for a speed limit reduction" as part of the planned improvement works and implement safety measures as soon as possible.

It was seconded by Cllr Graeme Downie, who said he had highlighted speeding drivers as an issue in Shiresmill recently and added: "There seems to be some reluctance to take action even when there's hard data as well, and instances such as those outlined by Cllr Steele that suggest this should be pursued."

The committee approved the motion.
