TALENTED teenage potter Jack Borwick missed out on defeating a two-time World Snooker Championship finalist at a major competition.

The 15-year-old, from Cairneyhill, travelled to Leicester to play in the BetVictor Shoot Out, which took place from January 25-28.

A World Snooker Tour ranking event, several of the game’s top players, including former world champions Ken Doherty and Shaun Murphy; legendary six-time finalist Jimmy White (pictured with Jack); and Scot, Steven Maguire, all competed.

Jack was one of six promising young amateur players given the opportunity to take part in the unique competition, in which matches lasted for a maximum of 10 minutes, with players having a 15-second shot clock for the first half, and 10 seconds for the latter.

The Queen Anne High School pupil was drawn to face Ali Carter, who lost out to current champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the World Snooker Championship final twice.

Although he lost out to Carter, who won the German Masters tournament at the weekend, Jack's proud mum, Suzanne, said: “He said it was fine but I was getting nervous for him!

“He said he didn’t hear the crowd. He said you see the lights and things, and the stop clock is completely different to what you would experience, and you probably don’t get as much time as you think. There was a couple of shots that, would he have done differently in the normal circumstances? Yes, but it’s completely different, and anything could have happened!

“He took it all in his stride. He just loved it, just enjoyed being out there, and getting to showcase what he can do.”
