EUROPEAN boxing champion Niamh Mitchell has landed another title after picking up a top award at West Fife’s sporting ‘Oscars’.

The talented teenager was feted at the Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council Sports Awards for 2022 last night (Wednesday) by being named as Sports Personality of the Year.

The accolade, which is sponsored by the Press, was presented to the talented teenager after an outstanding year in the ring that saw her win the EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) European Junior Championship in Italy.

A kickboxer before taking up boxing more than three-and-a-half years ago, Niamh became the first female boxer to win gold for Scotland at a major international competition, following her stunning success in the 52kg light bantamweight category.

She also became just the second Scot to win gold at the European Junior Boxing Championships, and only the seventh male or female Scottish competitor in history to become a European champion at any level.

That success then saw her named as the Young Athlete of the Year at the Scottish Sports Awards 2022, which she was presented ahead of Commonwealth Games medal-winning swimmers Toni Shaw and Katie Shanahan, and is now the receipient of an award that has previously been won by the likes of former European athletics champion, and Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games medalist, Eilidh Doyle, fellow Olympian, Linsey MacDonald, and the late former Scotland badminton international, Russell Hogg.

Judoka Kirsty Marsh, who made her debut at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year, and talented Dunfermline Track and Field athletics duo, Darcie Black and Shayna Asamoah, were also shortlisted for the prize.

St Columba’s High School pupil, Lennon Docherty, was named as the Young Sports Personality of the Year after claiming victory in the 2022 Bemsee (British Motorcycle Racing Club) Kawasaki Team Green Cup, whilst Dunfermline Track and Field’s under-17 girls team were named as the winners of the Junior Team of the Year award.

The Team of the Year was won Dunfermline Reign basketball club’s men’s side, whilst athletes Finlay Davidson and Niamh Currie were named as joint winners of the East Kilbride Sports Council Award for athletes with a disability.

There were also joint winners in the Coach of the Year category, with James White, one of Niamh’s coaches, and rugby coach, Stuart Brown, feted; Julie Hogg, in badminton; Douglas Hill, hockey and cricket; and Andi Campbell, in football, were given Services to Sport accolades; and Woodmill’s Freya Sneddon was named as School Ambassador of the Year.

We will have a full round-up, with pictures from the evening and interviews with the winners, in next week’s Press.
