PARKING charges have been implemented at Limekilns Pier via a secure honesty box.
Concerns had been raised that the introduction of a Parking Charge Notification (PCN) scheme in the area would encourage drivers to park on the promenade and on surrounding streets.
However, Fife Coast and Countryside Trust (FCCT), who operate the carpark, has stated that the change will balance the potential for vehicle displacement with the need for a "fair, sustainable" system.
Robbie Blyth, Head of Operations at FCCT, said: "The Parking Charge Notification (PCN) Scheme will be introduced to Limekilns Pier car park to help mitigate against inappropriate parking and facilitate for those who wish to park overnight in a manner that is sustainable.
"The changes to the operation of the carpark are deemed reasonable and practical making the area far safer and will help facilitate easier access for all.
"After an extensive consultation the case was made and accepted by most stakeholders that the historic Unregulated Parking Scheme used for this car park was no longer fit for purpose and that change was needed.
"However, concerns were raised that the introduction of the PCN scheme with a parking meter would encourage drivers to park on the promenade and surrounding streets before having to pay and display a ticket within the car park."
The original proposals, as previously reported by the Press, have been altered to address and prevent parking in other areas and the scheme will be in place for a trial period.
For the remainder of this year payment will be made via a secure honesty box and displaying of a parking ticket will not be required.
Drivers will not be charged if they have a blue badge and parking will be free for everyone for up to three hours.
For periods over the hours it will cost £2 for all day parking between 7am and 10pm and £5 for overnight parking in one of the three designated bays.
FCCT will monitor this scheme and carry out further consultations before a parking metre is considered.
