A DUNFERMLINE group is scouting for volunteers so they can deliver their activities to more youngsters
The 39th Fife Scouts currently has a lengthy waiting list and is appealing for adults to come forward and get involved.
There are lots of different ways to get involved – one of which is with the Squirrel pack for children from four to six – which started just over a year ago.
Squirrel leader Janis McCulloch started the group in November 2021 and has been amazed at how popular the group is.
She had never volunteered with the Scouts before but was given full training and lots of support from the other leaders which, she says, has also helped with her day job at blood cancer charity Myeloma UK.
“As soon as we started the group we had a waiting list, we can’t believe how much of an appetite there is for Squirrels," said Janis. "It’s great. The Squirrels get to try a bit of everything from arts and crafts to toasting marshmallows or even helping the community. Every week is different.
“We would love to offer more places to the young people on the list, but we really need a few more adults to volunteer. I had never done anything like this before, but I was given so much support and free training to give me the skills I need.
"It’s also really boosted my public speaking skills, giving me greater confidence at work. If you can stand in front of four to six year-olds and answer their questions, then a work meeting is a doddle.”
The group would love to hear from adults who would be interested in getting involved. To find our more email gsl@39thfifescouts.co.uk.
