DUNFERMLINE will be the first area in Fife to benefit from a new initiative aimed at helping those at high risk of a fall or who have recently had a fall.
Fife Sports and Leisure Trust (FSLT) is adding targeted prevention sessions to help vulnerable people improve their balance, strength and mobility to its successful health programme for people living with long-term health conditions.
The Active Stability sessions will begin at the end of May at Duloch Leisure Centre, with other sites to follow.
The classes, run by health team members and qualified Level 4 Postural Stability instructors Gavin Keith and Susan Wilson, will run for 16 weeks with participants supported with a variety of different exercise options tailored to the individual’s ability.
The trust is accepting referrals from any health professional or service provider who works with people at risk of falls.
Fiona Prendergast, health and wellbeing manager at FSLT, said: "We are very excited about this programme – it’s a great addition to our health programme which supports people living with conditions such as cancer, dementia, diabetes and cardiac disease and it is another great example of partnership working delivering for local people.
"Research tells us that those living with health conditions, who participate in tailored physical activity sessions, experience health and wellbeing benefits that in turn can alleviate symptoms and reduce the need for further medical intervention.
"In addition, participants on our health programme regularly report that they enjoy meeting other people and sharing experiences."
