DERBY day goalscorer Lewis McCann joked that it was an "odd bunch" who stepped up and were spot-on for the Pars on Saturday.

But the 22-year-old believes that the draw, and subsequent bonus-point penalty shoot-out success, over Raith Rovers can give the team confidence ahead of their Championship return.

Dunfermline's first competitive match of the season took them to Kirkcaldy in Group F of the Viaplay Cup, with McCann giving them a 30th minute lead.

Dylan Easton pulled Raith level before half-time and, despite both teams going in search of a winner, the spoils were shared after an absorbing 90 minutes.

McCann, Sam Fisher, Joe Chalmers and Matty Todd then scored in the shoot-out to determine who received an additional point and, despite Paul Allan having his effort saved, misses by Rovers duo, Jamie Gullan and Lewis Vaughan, ensured it went Pars' way.

"We don’t really have set penalty takers when it comes to penalty shoot-outs. We practised a couple on Friday," McCann commented.

"So, the gaffer just said to us whoever feels confident, go and do it. It was an odd bunch who went up but, luckily, the majority converted and Paul was unlucky; it was a good penalty and a good save.

"Raith are a very good team, they pop the ball about quite well. You saw that in the second-half when they probably had the majority of the possession.

"But it just feels good to get back on the score-sheet."

When asked if he hoped that would spark a run of goals, McCann, who joked that his calf "felt like cement" with around 20 minutes to go, continued: "Hopefully. Last season as well, I felt like I just needed one to go in the back of the net and then I went on a wee run - and then got injured.

"It’s just a big confidence booster to get on the score-sheet, especially being the first competitive game.

"It’s a different level to friendlies, but it was a good test to see where we are, and that we can come up the leagues and compete against an established Championship team."
