EWAN OTOO believes that he needs to work on becoming a more positionally disciplined player and reckons games like Saturday's Fife derby will help him do it.

The 20-year-old played his first competitive game for Dunfermline since signing for the club on a permanent basis during last Saturday's Viaplay Cup, Group F opener at Raith Rovers, a game he had "been looking forward to" all week.

Otoo was deployed in midfield by his manager, James McPake for the 1-1 draw, after which Dunfermline won a penalty shoot-out 4-2 to collect an extra bonus point, before they defeated Annan Athletic on Tuesday evening.

The former Celtic player agreed a move to Athletic in the summer following a successful loan spell last term, in which he played 11 times to help the club win the League One title, and promotion to the Championship.

After starting with the Hoops at the age of eight, Otoo signed his first professional contract with the Glasgow giants in 2019, and went on to captain their 'B' side, featuring largely in the Lowland League and SPFL Trust Trophy.

The Scotland youth cap is now preparing for his first shot at second tier football, in which he will lock horns again with Rovers, and felt that Saturday's match will help bring his game on in the longer-term.

When asked about McPake urging him to drop back in the game's late stages, Otoo replied: "That is the thing that I need to develop.

"I’m still young and need to get discipline in my game. Towards the end of the game we need to see it out and maybe just know where we are in the game.

"I am just happy to play wherever the gaffer needs and wants me to play. I see myself as a versatile player, however I am able to help the team I am happy to do that. I enjoy playing football wherever I’m playing.

"We have had a very good pre-season, the boys have applied themselves very well and we were raring to go on Saturday. Hopefully you saw that out there.

"There were plenty of positives for the team in general. I think there is stuff we can work on as a team. Individually, I am always trying to improve ,and I know that I can always get better in different ways.

"I will be looking back on Saturday’s game, analysing it to see how I can use that to go forward."

When asked if it was a test of where the squad is, looking ahead to the league campaign, Otoo replied: "We knew that it would be a challenge.

"We know Raith are an established Championship side, so we know playing against them is a good opportunity to test what we are all about. We will just take it game by game but it was a good start.

"We know that this is the kind of standard of opposition that we will face so to get a positive result is good for the confidence going forward."
