THREE gymnasts from Acrobay in Rosyth will be representing Great Britain at the European Championships.

Molly McHale, 18, Nephele Idehen, 17, and Daisy Campbell, 14, have been selected for the British team at the championships in Varna, Bulgaria in October.

However, since the three girls are competing in the Junior Squad, the trip, which will cost a £9,000, is completely self-funded.

Kerri McHale, Molly's mum, told the Press: "They're doing really well and it's a wonderful surprise but it took us a bit aback because they only started training together in January.

"Previously, Nephele and Daisy were a pair and their coach brought Molly in to create a new trio. Their first competition together was in March so we hadn't seen this on our radar.

"We were pleasantly surprised when they were selected but it does mean that we've had to very quickly get mobilised to raise the money to get them there."

Despite getting a small grant from Scottish Gymnastics, the girls still need to find the funds to get them their three flights to the competition and their various costumes.

They've applied for multiple grants but in order to get them there, they've also set up a GoFundMe page.

Kerri continued: "We've been blown over by the wave of support from friends and family and even the wider gymnastics community."

Not only have friends donated their part-time job wages, but other Acrobay students have given their pocket money and gymnasts who have competed in the Commonwealth Games have shared the girls' fundraiser.

"The girls were really touched that the whole gymnastic community have rallied around to try and help them," Kerri said.

"The couldn't believe how many people have helped them."

She continued: "At first we were a bit panic stricken but then we thought 'right we've got to do everything we can to try and get them there' because it's a chance of a lifetime.

"These girls, some of them have been doing it since they were toddlers, and you can't not try and get them there."

The girls' coach, Suzanne Fraser, will be joining them at the championships.

She said: "The girls were in one of the hardest categories and they fought tooth and nail in the trial process. We are all delighted with the outcome and we are extremely proud of what they have achieved in such a short time together as a trio.

"We wish them and everyone in the GB Team the best of luck at the upcoming European championships.”
