A young musical family from Dunfermline have been nominated and shortlisted for a prestigious award at this year’s MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

The Shands, made up of Clelland (18), Blythe (17), and Inver (15), are in the running for the Up and Coming Artist of the Year award.

The siblings have always had music in their lives.

They said: “We have always been surrounded with music as our dad, Gordon, has his own successful Scottish Dance Band and our grandfather is a self taught melodeon player so music runs in the family.

“It all started for us when Clelland started accordion lessons with top tutor Keith Dickson when he was only seven years of age. A week later his sister Blythe took up piano lessons and as Inver was feeling left out when his brother and sister were away getting lessons, he decided he would also like to join them and took up the accordion aged six.

"We have had so many wonderful experiences to date and made many good friends through our music and we are looking forward to what the future holds for us.”

Speaking of what it would mean to them to win, The Shands said: “It would be such an honour and would be a great platform for us to build on and increase our fan base in the years ahead.”

The Shands have several performances lined up to look forward to.

They added: “We have various gigs lined up next year and have been approached by theatres about putting on our own show next summer.

“However, at the moment we are delighted to have been invited back into the studio in December this year to record a concert session for BBC Radio Scotland’s Christmas special ‘Take The Floor’ programme.”
