Better World Books has donated enough books for all 350 children at a Fife primary school.

Inverkeithing Primary School held a book giveaway on Friday, November 17 for pupils to choose one free book each. All 350 children got to choose a book that they then got to take home with them to keep.

This was the primary school’s third book giveaway. Some of the books available for the children to choose from included Room on the Broom, The Wind in the Willows, and some of the Mr Men and Little Miss books.

Caroline Gardiner, headteacher at Inverkeithing Primary school, said: “Our donation from Better World Books in Dunfermline was a pallet of books that we were able to use however we wanted to in school. So what we’ve chosen to do is spread out donations of free books to every child in the school.

“Every child can come down, they can choose from a range of books that are age and stage appropriate for them, they get great delight in choosing a fiction or a non-fiction book, they love sharing their stories, the last session that we did at the start of the school year on national reading day was also supported with parents coming in and sharing the books too.”

Better World Books are a global online bookseller that collects and sells new and used books online.

Sarah Duguid, managing director UK at Better World Books, said: “It’s fantastic, we’re really keen to try and support any sort of local community initiatives regarding literacy and education through donations and literacy grants, so anything that we can do to support primary schools we’re absolutely happy to do so.”

She added that Better World Books have “donated over 35 million books, we have sold over 100 million books and we have prevented over 450 million books from going to landfill through reuse and recycling”.

Better World Book has also made donations this year to other Fife schools and groups including St Margaret’s Primary School, Halbeath Nursery, North Queensferry Community Centre, and Duloch Primary Parent Council.

Caroline added: “Our 350 children will go home with a free book and then our next free giveaway they’re going to go home with two books, so actually by the end of this we’ll have given away thousands of free books to our whole school community. So I can’t thank Better World Books enough.”
