Scotland’s biggest combat sports and commercial 24-hour access gym is set to open at Rosyth Dockyard.
Facilities for MMA, Boxing, Jiu Jitsu and more will be available, as well as an on-site fitness café and takeaway.
Goliath Gym is the next steps for Goliath MMA, who had previously set up gyms in Cowdenbeath and Kelty.
Steven Harris, owner and head coach of Goliath MMA, said: “We’ve gotten to the point where it was time to expand again. Our MMA classes were absolutely rammed. It got to the point where people were rolling their ankles because they were standing on each other’s toes.”
When the chance to move to Rosyth came up, Steven jumped at it, saying: “This opportunity came up through a friend who is a property investor, who let me know that this was now available. I enquired, and it’s been a long time coming, but we finally have the go ahead and we’re starting to move things in.
“MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. We have guys travelling from all over, so Rosyth is a perfect location. It’s so accessible, so I think this is the perfect spot for us.”
It hasn’t been easy, but Steven has put in the work to get to this stage.
Steven said: “We’re a family-run business. There are no big money men behind us. We’ve built this with blood, sweat and tears. My missus owns her own fitness studio as well. The last six years we’ve been smart in reinvesting our profits into upgrading equipment and kicking on.
“I’m 37 this month and I’ve been training in combat sports since I was 13 or 14 years old. The gym itself is only about seven years old. We’ve gone from a dance hall studio to a 1,000 sqft unit, to doubling that to 2,000 sqft, to moving into a 10,000 sqft and now we have the 30,000 sqft unit.”
On what sets Goliath apart from other gyms, Steven said: “It’s not just the fact that it’s a combats sport hub, but the family-run element gives it that big community feel. Everyone who joins the gym is either known or referred. It’s not a private gym but it runs on a kind of referral system.
“We have top of the range facilities too, which really helps. Alongside myself, we have Chris Duncan teaching at the gym, who is a UFC fighter, Scott Malone, who is with Cage Warriors, and our Jiu Jitsu coach Ben Fletcher is a black belt from Edinburgh, so we’ve got the best of coaching as well.”
Some of the other facilities on offer include a sauna, a steam room, and a recovery room with a cold plunge and jacuzzi.
The Café will be operated by 'Fresh' by Wicked, a joint venture between Steven and Jason Thirwall, who were behind Wicked Cheesecake.
Now that Goliath have the go ahead, Steven is hoping they can get up and running in Rosyth soon, saying: “I’m hoping that it will be within the next 10 weeks, we’re in the process of moving stuff in and we’re about to paint the place but it’s 30,000 square feet.
"We’re reliant on manpower so there’s a lot of variables that could go wrong, but fingers crossed.”
