WORKS to improve a footway on the A985 road near Charlestown have had to be halted due to a question over land ownership.

Bear Scotland began the five week job on February 26 but it's now been postponed until later in the year with just under half of the 1.1km stretch completed.

The work involved widening the footpath on the southern side of the A985 between the junction to Charlestown (West Road) and the junction to Waggon Road and Crossford.

Tommy Deans, Bear Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “A question has arisen over the precise boundary of the trunk road, so we’ve postponed the rest of these works until we’ve resolved the issue in collaboration with neighbouring landowners.

“Our intention is to return to site to complete delivery of the works later in the year.

“We’re grateful to road users and local residents for their patience and understanding.”

Temporary traffic lights that were in place since the start of the works in February, which included a lane closure, have been removed and the site has been made safe.

So far, the footway has been widened over approximately 500 metres of the 1.1km stretch.

The full length of the path remains open to the public.
