Enquiries are underway after another fire at a derelict building in Dunfermline.

Last Wednesday, flames were again spotted at an outbuilding on Pittencrieff Street.

Garry Haldane, a former Dunfermline councillor, told the Press: “There was six youths, five boys and one girl. They had been in the buildings, they had come round to the small children’s play park in Pittencrieff Street and run amok at the playpark.

“As I was going out, they were running back up towards the old plumbers merchants and when I got around the corner they had all been stopped by the police.

“I have been in the unit and I can see why the kids go there because it’s a big open space and it’s covered from the weather.”

He had previously raised concerns about the danger of youngsters getting into derelict buildings.

It's the second incident in a matter of weeks. As previously reported in the Press, a 13 year-old boy was charged in connection with a fire at the same empty property in Pittencrieff Street in April.

Mr Haldane said: “It’s a matter of time before the building collapses.

“If they can’t make the building secure, they should be held to account.

“If they’re not going to make it secure and safe, then they should be made to take it down.”

He said the owners have tried to block up entrances, but these have been forced open.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7pm on Wednesday May 15, police received a report of a fire at an outbuilding on Pittencrieff Street, Dunfermline. The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”
