A FORMER Lib Dem councillor has raised safety fears after witnessing motorists speeding through Newmills.

Gerry McMullan claimed that drivers are tearing through the village at speeds of 60mph and over and nobody is doing anything about it.

Not only is he worried for local residents' safety, he also fears for their property as his own car has been hit three times.

Fed up, he told the Press: "I’m concerned for somebody's life, to be honest with you.

"There are cars that go up there at 50-60mph plus, these little souped-up cars that they have. I think it’s a 20mph limit through the village.

"My car has been hit three times, another car has been hit at least twice. It’s on the hill going through Newmills and the speed of cars coming in from both ends is horrendous.

"They take off the mirrors, they drive so close to the cars and the cars are legally parked, it's not as if they’re in a dangerous place.

"I think they lose control and they start scraping down the sides of cars.

"Although there are speed bumps, they’re no good whatsoever.

"What they actually need is, at the very top of the hill and the bottom, in my opinion, is a speed platform where you have to slow down and go over it, that’s what's required, that will slow them down."

Despite having what he feels to be a solution, Gerry says that he hasn't seen anyone do anything to rectify the situation.

He continued: "I've never seen anybody, nobody ever knocks on a door to ask questions, I've never even seen council officers here doing a site visit.

"It’s like; ‘We might know what’s happening but we’re not doing anything about it.’

"I just think the elected members are not the same type of elected members as I was when I was on Fife Council, I can assure you."

Now he is considering returning to the fray and running for election himself, as an independent candidate.

He added: "At least people would know where I stayed and that there was a councillor on their doorstep, as opposed to a faceless wonder.

"I just think that the elected members, I don't know what they do, I honestly do not know what they do.

"They certainly don't knock on doors to say ‘we understand there’s an issue’ because they must know that there’s an issue."

Fife Council say they have exhausted engineering measures to reduce speeding. Service manager Sara Wilson commented: "The main road through Newmills is within a 20mph scheme and has traffic management measures including signage, pedestrian refuges and speed humps in place.

"We can take no further engineering measures to reduce speeds here, but If residents are concerned about speeding, they should report incidents to Police Scotland."
