A LOCAL man decided to create a new map to help Dunfermline residents make the most of the great outdoors.

Volunteers say it'll help more people to enjoy Duloch Park and Calais Woods and improvements will soon include a new path to the Dunfermline Learning Campus.

This will see a 3km 'purple' route added to the existing three marked routes.

Michael Pattinson, a volunteer with Duloch Path Group, commented: "It’s fantastic to have the woods and park on our doorstep. I'm always walking round with the pram, chasing my toddler on her bike or taking the dog for a walk.

“It struck me that there wasn't any signage, or map to help publicise the paths, so I thought I'd get one created."

Duloch Path Group is part of Calais Woods Conservation Group, set up to help maintain paths in and around Duloch.

With help from Fife Council, Michael engaged experts Made by Landmark and a leaflet has been developed.

Michael added: "This has been a great example of volunteers from local groups working together with the council to deliver.

“I've had help from the parks team, communities team and those working on the new learning campus.”

The woods has two playparks, a duck pond and is brimming with wildlife and history.

Part of the route goes past a bronze age burial site, along an old railway line built in the late 1700s, and past lime quarries and a lime kiln.

Cllr James Calder, City of Dunfermline area committee convener, said: “Thanks to Dunfermline's local community planning budget we're able to support Duloch Path Group with this project.

“Local community planning is bringing together local communities with decision makers and funding; making a positive difference in our area.

"The new map of Calais Woods and Duloch Park is making it easier for people to get outside and discover what's on their doorstep."
