THE NUMBER of potholes repaired in Dunfermline and West Fife soared compared to last year.

In 2023/24, there were 1,494 repairs carried out in the city and 1,747 in the South and West Fife area - which includes Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay, Valleyfield, Culross and Kincardine - compared to 916 and 1,098 the previous year.

The figures, which were in a report to councillors, also revealed the number of potholes still waiting to be fixed.

In Dunfermline, there are still 332 while there are 520 in South and West Fife.

Gordon Henderson, the council's lead consultant for network condition, said work was continuing to address problem defects.

"Pothole repairs and carriageway patching increased across all committees, excluding North East Fife, as there was an increased focus to address high priority defects and outstanding patching programmes during 2022-23," he explained.

"Resources have concentrated on areas of greatest need in 2023/24, focusing on defects and problem areas identified during regular planned safety inspections and ad-hoc site visits derived from customer enquiries.

"During 2024-25 to deal with the backlog of repairs and ensure durability of completed works, we have developed a revenue maintenance programme that includes velocity patching, thin surfacing treatments, surface dressing and patching.

"We are concentrating available resources to the task with small squads dealing with patches under two square metres, including temporary repairs, with surfacing teams picking up larger patches."
