KELTY kids have planted a garden at the Lindsay Pit memorial site.

The children at St Joseph's Primary School worked closely with Kelty Community Council and Kelty Greening to achieve their Eco Award Green flag and completed the project as a part of this.

They went above and beyond choosing plant types and colours and restoring memorial stones for the nine miners who lost their lives in the disaster in December 1957.

To mark the opening of their memorial garden, they invited their parents and carers along to unveil their work before they celebrated with games and a picnic.

A spokesperson for the school said: "Our learners have thoroughly enjoyed planning and planting the garden as part of their work towards achieving their Eco Scotland Green Flag Award.

"The opportunities for our learners to work closely with community groups have been hugely beneficial in teaching them responsibility, confidence and teamwork."
