A WEST Fife recycling centre will be changing how it operates later this month.

Dalgety Bay Recycling Centre will be implementing a booking system from July 29 due to health and safety concerns with managing traffic in the site.

A sign has now appeared at the centre informing visitors of the decision.

Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay councillor David Barratt, convener of the South West Fife Area Committee, commented on the decision on his Facebook page.

He wrote: “I was not part of the decision and am not entirely convinced the step is necessary.

“Councillors were provided a report setting out health and safety concerns, including three incidents occurring this year which resulted in injury to members of the public and staff.

“The conclusion is that the site is too small for the numbers attending and that risk to the public and staff can't be managed adequately without a booking system.

“I have further clarified that the long promised pedestrian access will not be happening.

"The long term solutions appears to be having a larger recycling centre, although the Council appears to be saying this isn't likely to be possible in Dalgety Bay, so could see the site close.

“I've challenged this and encouraged the Council to look at adjacent land. I'm not filled with optimism, but I'm up for a but I'm up for a fight.”

Cireco manage Fife’s recycling centres on behalf of Fife Council, confirmed the move this morning (Tuesday).

Robin Baird, chief executive at Cireco, said: “This small recycling centre has a high volume of traffic which often causes heavy congestion both within the facility and in the surrounding area.

"A number of incidents at the site in recent months means that the booking measures already in place at Cupar and Ladybank Recycling Centres now also need to be introduced at Dalgety Bay.”

Councillor Jan Wincott, Fife Council spokesperson for climate change and environment, said: "Following a number of incidents at the Dalgety Bay Recycling Centre, a new advance booking system is being put in place to better manage demand at the recycling centre.

"This booking system will ensure that there is less congestion, and long queues, for residents attending the site, and it is expected to help further improve recycling rates.

"We thank residents for their patience and co-operation as the new system comes into effect."
