DUNFERMLINE MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville is giving plans for a new skatepark in the city her "full support."

The new Dunfermline Regeneration Trust (DRT) project is ambitious with the funding target for the construction of the upgraded skatepark set at around £325,000.

Approximately 60 per cent of the money they require has already been raised, but several of the funds require construction to get underway by a certain time to remain valid.

Ms Somerville said: "I am delighted to offer my full support for a new skatepark to be built in Dunfermline.

"As Scotland's newest city, Dunfermline deserves a modern facility that can provide a fun and accessible space for skaters of all ages.

"The current skatepark has unfortunately been badly neglected and people are instead choosing to travel elsewhere in the Central Belt, to use sites that are better maintained.

"I will be working closely with the local community to increase awareness of this project and try to help secure the remaining funding the group need to make their exciting plans a reality."

Last September, Dunfermline Athletic's East End Park became a fully functioning skatepark for a day, with portable ramps and obstacles erected on the concourse of the Norrie McCathie stand.

More recently, skateboarding taster sessions were offered to pupils at Commerical and St Leonards Primary Schools by a team of four expert coaches.

All of this was done to bring attention to the DRT's efforts to modernise the skatepark.

DRT trustee, Fiona Simpson, added: "We have been working hard on the skatepark project for around five years now and are excited that the end is finally and hopefully in sight.

"We have ensured through our community consultation that there is something in the new skatepark design for all users; for BMX, for skateboarders, scooters and skaters.

"Feedback from our focus group shows that the design is pretty good and the design and construction company are now working with the skatepark users to tweak the design to ensure it is spot on.

"The culture around skateparks is just wonderful, the people are so inclusive and ready to help others who are not as skilled as them.

"We plan to launch a Crowdfunder and Sponsorship appeal in September; this is our final push and we hope local people and businesses will support us to get this project over the line.

"Then the people of Dunfermline can have the facility they deserve!"
