An employee at a Dunfermline vet firm who stole more than £30,000 from the business is currently working in another finance post.

His present employers know nothing about Derek Giblin’s crooked past.

This emerged when 59-year-old Giblin appeared back in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He embezzled from his Dunfermline employers over a period of more than five years.

Giblin, of Calderwood Road, Glasgow, admitted that on various occasions between 26th August 2009 and 9th September 2014, at Vets Now, Castle Riggs, Dunfermline, while an employee there, he embezzled the sum of £31,493.07.

Sheriff Krista Johnston had called for reports and had more questions when Giblin returned to court.

“He says he’s offered to repay the money to the company on numerous occasions. Why wouldn’t they take it?” she inquired.

After consulting with his client, defence solicitor Martin McGuire said that there had in fact been no direct contact with the firm offering to pay it back.

The sheriff responded: “Why does it say in the report that he offered to pay it back numerous times? Is that just a lie? The reality is he’s made no contact with the company.”

She added: “It seems that, remarkably, he’s still working in finance.”

Mr McGuire confirmed that was the case but that his current employers do not know about his conviction.

“That again is remarkable,” commented the sheriff. “Can he pay back the money? He’s not managed to accumulate the money over the years since the offence.”

Mr McGuire said his client would be looking into whether he could withdraw money from his pension fund or take a loan.

Sheriff Johnston deferred sentencing further until 12th August.
