A DUNFERMLINE resident has spoken of the impact roadworks in Dunfermline are having on his life.

John McHardie has lived on Gardeners Street for over 30 years, but the recent works at the foot of Townhill Road have led to delivery problems for him.

As previously reported in the Press, the four way traffic lights are part of a major £3m protect to upgrade the city’s electricity network by SP Energy Networks.

John commented: “Myself and my wife are both 75 and I have a heart condition and diabetes, we really quite rely on deliveries.

“It’s important to us to be able to get deliveries and already we have had difficulty getting stuff and then Amazon couldn’t deliver at all.”

It’s also extremely difficult for John to get his car out of his garage now with traffic being backed up from the roadworks.

As a result of the works, he said delivery drivers are unable to stop in the street.

“It’s difficult and also just now it’s lovely weather, and we can’t use the garden because of the fumes.

"The main thing just now is the fumes, you can smell it in the house,” he added.

On Monday night John said the temporary traffic lights failed and were stuck on red, leaving to gridlock and fuming motorists who were unable to go anywhere for nearly 30 minutes.

He explained that the lights are on a wireless network: “If one part fails they all fail to red as a safety measure, the whole thing comes to a stop, that’s happened to me twice now.”

He managed to speak to a police officer who was nearby, and she gave the waiting cars permission to proceed with caution.

“It’s very, very difficult to move about the city just now without holdups,” John told the Press.

SP Energy Networks say the project will increase resilience and prepare for the connection of more low-carbon technologies, like EV chargers and heat pumps.

But there was a warning at the outset there would also be "significant disruption" in the city, with work taking place from Elgin Street to Townhill.

Traffic measures are in place at the junction of Townhill Road and Gardeners Street as part of work being carried out until around September.

An SP Energy Networks spokesperson said: “We are aiming to complete the works on this section of Townhill Road within the next seven days.

“These works are part of our wider £3m investment in the area and we have worked extensively with our stakeholders, including the local authority, on our plans to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience.”
