ONE man’s tale of growing up in Inverkeithing has been told as a Dunfermline band prepare to release their new single.
Broken by Rock, made up of singer Alan Clarke, drummer Derek McKee and bass player Andrew Clarke, are getting set to launch their latest song Kingdom.
As told by Alan, Kingdom is about his life growing up in Inverkeithing and about how, despite moving away from the area, Fife will always be his home.
This is the band’s second single from their current release schedule, with Alan explaining that this is the biggest work the band has put out so far.
He said: “I’m originally from Inverkeithing before moving to Edinburgh and then onto Glasgow.
“All through my adult life, I’ve played in bands and I’ve written songs and we usually just recorded stuff ourselves.
“We’ve now went into studios in Edinburgh and recorded some songs which we’ve put up now.
“Our new song Kingdom comes out on August 30 and we’re doing a gig at Nice n Sleazy the day after to coincide with the release."
The first new song the band recorded, titled Popstars, was released in May and was picked by BBC Scotland as single of the week.
Alan explained that he was inspired to write the song following the death of his father last year.
His family had to sell the home that had been in the family for four decades, which led to him reminiscing on his life growing up in Inverkeithing.
“That was a bit weird,” he continued. “I’ve still got friends in Inverkeithing but a big tie to Fife was going back to my mum and dad’s house.
“The process of selling the house inspired me to write a song about Inverkeithing and my life there.
“The song relates to a specific place in the song writer’s case but also reflects on a sense of belonging that geographical dislocation can’t easily erase – a more universal theme that everyone can relate to in some way or another.”
Kingdom is set to be released on Friday, August 30, with the band holding a gig at Nice n Sleazy in Glasgow to celebrate the release on Saturday, August 31.
