Two of the team at Juniper Wine Cafe in Dunfermline, are walking one million steps for Diabetes UK.

Tanya Hedges and Alan Martin are each walking the million steps between July and the end of September to fundraise for the charity.

Alan, who is originally from Ayrshire but has lived in Dunfermline for the last three years, got involved as his wife, Jane, was diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was 40.

Tanya who is a "Dunfermline girl born and bred" was also diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was just seven years old.

Alan commented that they thought it was a: “Really good idea to get involved with the million steps walk and raise some money for the diabetes charity.

“Tanya had done it before, and she suggested it, and I was well up for that.”

As part of it, Alan has walked from Dunfermline to the Forth Road Bridge and back. The duo also need to average out at around 11,000 steps a day to reach one million steps before the challenge ends later this month.

Speaking of the walking, Alan said: “You certainly feel it in your feet the next day!

“You kind of want to go the extra mile.

“I had a heart attack just over three years ago now, so I want to be more active and do things that are a healthy pursuit, walking is part of my recovery.”

You can donate to Tanya and Alan’s fundraiser online.

Through sponsorship from family, friends and customers at the Juniper Wine Cafe, they have now raised £2140.

“We actually initially set our target at £500 and we blew that out the water.

“We haven’t changed our target on our fundraising page, but mentally we want to get to the £2500 level.” Alan told the Press.

Both Tanya and Alan have now joined up to do 62 miles in October for Diabetes UK.
