BRAVE swimmers keen to mark New Year’s Day with a challenge can look forward to the return of the Limekilns Breakfast Dip.

The popular ‘loony dook’ is making a comeback in the village in January after a brief hiatus due to high tide lines this year.

The Breakfast Dip is usually hugely popular, with hundreds of people making the dip into the freezing Forth to mark the new year.

This year’s dip is being organised by Alex Hill, who launched a Facebook event to stir up interest ahead of the dip on January 1.

He wrote: “Get rid of that thick head and tiredness by waking yourself up with a dip in the balmy waters of the River Forth.

“We’ll have hot drinks and food for sale, plus the funkiest outside music for the repair of our 16th C Pier so apart from the £10 charge to go in the water, we’ll have a raffle as well.

“Make sure you read the regular updates on this page so you know what to do if you’re new to dipping.

“As there are many other loony dook events on New Year’s Day, it’s worth realising that this picturesque village event that attracts many hundreds is probably the best one.”

The dip costs a £10 entry charge, with the event being used as a fundraiser to save Limekilns Pier.

The historic pier had fallen into disrepair, with a group forming in 2015 to preserve the structure and promote education on Limekiln’s history.

A website was launched to keep residents updated on the progress surrounding the preservation.

The page reads: “A group of concerned local residents came together in 2015 determined to save Limekilns Pier for the community.

“That group has transformed into Limekilns Heritage Trust, an incorporated charitable organisation registered in Scotland.

“The principal aims of the Trust are to preserve the pier and historic sites within the local communities of Limekilns, Charlestown and Pattiesmuir and to educate local children about the history of these sites.”

The dip will take place on The Promenade in Limekilns. Anyone interested should follow the Limekilns Breakfast Dip 2025 event on Facebook.
