Thousands of pensioners in Dunfermline and Dollar may lose their winter fuel payments.

Official statistics reveal that 3,739 people aged over 80 in these areas are at risk due to government cuts.

Dunfermline South Lib Dem councillor, James Calder, said: "Thousands of pensioners here in Dunfermline are desperately worried about how they will make it through this winter.

"We are especially concerned about vulnerable older pensioners, and these figures are deeply worrying.

"We have heard countless stories from those who now say they will have to choose between staying warm or putting food on the table as a result of this government’s decision."

The Lib Dems have urged the government to reconsider, stating that many pensioners might have to choose between heating and eating this winter.

The new data analysis shows that these 3,739 pensioners, who do not receive pension credit, will lose their winter fuel payment unless they receive other benefits.

Previously, all those aged over 80 were entitled to £300 each to help with their energy bills during the winter months.

Last year, those aged over 80 in Dunfermline and Dollar received £1,048,800 in support, with £2,869,000 given to all pensioners in the constituency.

Cllr Calder said this figure will significantly decrease this winter following the government's decision to withdraw support for the majority of pensioners.

In total, 16,046 pensioners in Dunfermline and Dollar do not receive pension credit and are also at risk of losing support due to the government’s cuts.

Age UK has previously warned that 2.5 million pensioners will 'be in serious trouble' this winter due to the cutting of the payments.

Cllr Calder urged the government to "change course, reverse these proposals and protect vulnerable pensioners here in Dunfermline this winter".
