A DUNFERMLINE man suffered severe injuries after crashing an off-road motorbike into railings.

Thomas Reynolds, 21, of Woodmill Crescent, appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on 25th November last year at South Larch Road, Dunfermline, he drove an unregistered motorbike without insurance.

He also drove the motorbike carelessly at excessive speed, on a footpath, failed to maintain proper control, colliding with railings whereby he was seriously injured.

Depute fiscal Lauren Pennycook said at 5.45pm someone was walking their dog and saw a motorbike being driven at speed on the footpath before hitting railings, which were left bent and broken.

An ambulance was called and Reynolds was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

He had suffered a fractured neck, pelvic fractures, eight broken ribs, serious lung injuries and a brain injury.

Defence solicitor Alexander Flett said the off-road bike had been transported to the area and his client did not appreciate it was a designated public place.

It was previously countryside and is now more built-up, he added.

“He has no recollection of the accident,” said the solicitor.

“He must have been going at some speed,” commented Sheriff Susan Duff.

The court was told Reynolds has now made a full recovery and is back working as an apprentice joiner, although this could be put at risk by losing his licence.

Sheriff Duff told Reynolds: “You’ve racked up quite a number of road traffic offences for someone your age.”

She endorsed his licence with six penalty points which will mean a six-month ban under totting up. Reynolds was also fined £170.
