A SUGGESTION that applicants are facing a wait of up to eight years for housing in Dunfermline has been denied by Fife Council.

Councillor Derek Glen asked the question after a report stated there were 2,361 applicants for a home in the city with 307 offers made last year.

At the City of Dunfermline area committee on Tuesday he asked if the figures meant there was "effectively a seven or eight year waiting list"?

Dunfermline area housing manager, Lynne Johnston, replied: "Waiting times are very difficult to put a broad brush over as it really depends on the applicant's circumstances and the type of property they're looking for.

"For example someone waiting for a two-bedroom flat is going to wait less time than someone looking for a four-bedroom, wheelchair accessible bungalow, so it's difficult to put an exact timeframe on it."

Her report to the committee said there are 3,444 council homes in the Dunfermline area, and the "majority" are two-bedroom properties.

Just over 41 per cent are houses, around 27 per cent are flats, six per cent are in high-rise blocks and almost 20 per cent are four-in-a-block homes.

The remainder is retirement housing. The committee was given an update on a revised area housing plan.

The plans include investments in existing council housing, with money to go on kitchens, central heating, bathrooms, roofs, rewiring, smoke detectors, secure door entry systems, structural works, electrical testing and external walls.

Ms Johnston said they'll also try and use more pockets of land for parking in Abbeyview.
