Around 1700 children from across Scotland flocked to Dunfermline’s Pittencrieff Park to take part in the “Scottish Schools Road Run.”

Organised by the Scottish Schools Athletics association, the event involved both primary and secondary pupils.

Races were categorised by age group and gender and included a Parasport race for those with additional support needs.

Active Schools coordinator for St Columbus High Stacy Alderman said: “The park was absolutely buzzing with life, and the weather couldn’t have been better if we chose it ourselves.

“As someone who’s trying to encourage participation for all, this is an unbelievable event. It’s ultimately raising the profile of running and athletics.

“On the socialisation of it, they were mixing with Schools from across the whole of Scotland. Most of the kids there were also probably representing a local club in their own time. Active Schools are of the opinion that first and foremost you should be representing your school, because it’s about that comradery as a team and putting your school on the map.”

The race coincided with Scottish girls and women in sport week. Organiser Margaret McInally said: We actually had more girls take part than boys, and that’s been the case with most of our Athletics events recently.

“We had a high percentage of people finishing too, which is great.”

The event was previously held at the Falkirk Stadium but moved to Pittencrieff Park in recent years.

Mrs McInally said: “The move to the glen was the best thing we ever did. It’s a great venue with no traffic, which is vitally important with young people running.

To see the enjoyment that they get out of this, it really makes this worthwhile.

Mrs McInally extended her thanks to local schools Woodmill and St Columbus for sending along young ambassadors who helped with running things, quite literally.
