A DUNFERMLINE athlete recently conquered the Edinburgh to Glasgow GB ultramarathon in record time.
Sara Eydmann completed the race in seven hours and 39 minutes - an incredible 50 minutes faster than the previous best.
The former Woodmill High School student said: “I’ve ran on and off for years. Without sounding cheesy it’s letting me dream and achieve goals that I didn’t think were possible.
“I ran a lot in lockdown and last year on October 15 I ran my first marathon and won it. After that I decided to take it a bit more seriously.
“I done my first ultramarathon in November 2023 and I won that as well, so that was really cool and unexpected.
“I started to wonder what else I could do. My aim had been a race in April to really push myself, but in March I got a stress fracture in my knee and was out for a few months.
“During that time, I decided I’d get a coach. I’d never had one till then, and he’s really helped me to structure my training better.
“After I came back from injury I done another four ultras. I came third in the first one and won all the rest.
“When you surround yourself with people who do these things, it becomes almost normal.”
The route from Edinburgh to Glasgow was relatively flat, in contrast to previous tracks Sara has tackled.
She said: “Lots of ultras involve trails like running up hills and stuff. One of them in May included two Munros!
“Sometimes in the Munros it’s so boggy you can’t run, and every time is different. Running on flat is all exactly the same and you don’t stop.
“I was pretty focused on what I was doing. There were times when my mind did wander but I was able to bring it back, whereas during other races when I’ve just been there to have fun I’ve definitely forgotten I’m racing!”
