THE closure of Cairneyhill’s Post Office was raised in the House of Commons during Thursday's business questions.

MP for Dunfermline and Dollar Graeme Downie said: “With many high street banks announcing local branch closures and pointing people to the Post Office as a resource for services, the attractiveness of being a sub-Postmaster has never been more important.

“Yet in my constituency of Dunfermline and Dollar, the Post Office in Cairneyhill is closing, and those considering taking it over are put off by the costs and complications.

He went on to ask if time can be allowed for a discussion on how to support new Postmasters, to which Leader of the House Lucy Powell responded: “I’m sure this would make an extremely good topic for a debate in this house.”

The post office is still looking for somebody to take over the service in Cairneyhill, which will shut on November 20 following the resignation of the Postmaster.

Mr Downie told the Press: “I know a couple of people or organisations locally that have been talking about taking it over, but they’re worried about the administration of setting it up and taking it on.

“The point of the question today was to see if there’s a way we could support and encourage people who are thinking about it.

“Because of the bad news stories and the failings that have happened in the Post Office that have come to light in the past few years, people need that reassurance that support will be there for them when they need it and they won’t be let down.

“You have to rebuild confidence in it as a business choice more than anything else.”

Chair of Cairneyhill Community Council, Chris Smith, recently said that it “doesn’t make sense” for the village to have no Post Office when there’s 70 houses being built, and a planning application submitted for another 256.

Mr Downie added: “I think Chris is right, and it points to the fact that if you did have someone take it on that was given the right support, they could turn it into a very successful business.

“From what I understand talking to the Post office at the Labour Party conference, that branch in Cairneyhill was doing well, and you’ve got a bunch of new houses which could help sustain that.”
