Dunfermline has been described as “underrated” by the author of a new book detailing every city in the UK.
“Bright Lights Big Cities” looks at the top ways to spend day trips and weekends away.
Sheffield based writer Peter Naldrett said: “I think Dunfermline is an underrated city and it probably deserves to get more visitors than it does with the abbey and the palace.”
“I found everything about Andrew Carnegie and his legacy particularly interesting. I had heard the name before, but I wasn’t sure about the extent of his legacy both here and in America.
“It sounds like a bit of a cliché, but every city we went to has a unique selling point, and a different feel to it. What I’ve enjoyed the most about writing the book is getting to grips with some of the characters that are from these cities and some of the history surrounding them as well.”
Mr Naldrett said he enjoyed the local hospitality and caught a rare glimpse of the Scottish sunshine.
He said: “It was a lovely sunny day, so it might have been a little bit different if it had been howling with wind and rain.
“I said in the beginning of the book that people often are a little bit down on the places where they live and where they come from, but you could have written a book on each of the cities. It was a challenge to narrow it down to a couple of pages.”
“It’s interesting that Dunfermline is a new city, because some places have applied four or five times to become one and got nowhere.”
In the book, Mr Naldrett recommends some popular Dunfermline businesses including the restaurants Antioch and Carlucci.
