The bus company Stagecoach has announced that military personnel will receive free bus travel on November 10 and 11.

The offer applies to any serving personnel or cadet in uniform, those with a military ID card, and veterans wearing medals or veterans' badges attending remembrance services.

Claire Miles, Stagecoach Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are incredibly proud to employ thousands of veterans, and it’s a privilege to honour the bravery and dedication of our Armed Forces, cadets, and veterans by offering free travel during Remembrance Weekend.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to supporting those who serve or have served our country, along with the families and communities who support them.”

Dunfermline Poppy Scotland volunteer Christine Evans said: “Some people think they should be offering that all the time, not just at remembrance services, but pretty much everybody thinks it’s a good idea.

“Especially if its’s an older person that maybe would have had to get a taxi before.”

However, some believe that the offer’s impact will be limited, such as one representative of the Royal British Legion Dunfermline Branch, who said: “Many of the younger veterans do not have any proof that they served and not all will be travelling in uniform, so while a nice idea it isn’t going to benefit all veterans.”

The representative also pointed out that many veterans are old enough that they already qualify for a bus pass.

In addition to the offer, some Stagecoach fleets will be decorated with poppy graphics as a symbol of and destination screens on buses will display messages of support to the armed forces.
