New traffic lights at the Bothwell Street Gardens roundabout are to be switched on.

Fife Council has announced that the new signals will be activated on Tuesday, November 19, at 10am.

The lights were installed following roadworks and initial site testing, but were left off to allow a review of the road lining and signal timings.

This review has now been completed.

Mark Dewar, roads and lighting contracts service manager, said: "We have refined the timings of the traffic signals to make sure they are the best fit for traffic conditions.

"Additional traffic surveys were needed to achieve this, and these had to be done later in October to avoid the school holidays when traffic levels are lower.

"The survey results have now been used to refine the new signal timings and the lights will be activated on Tuesday November 19, after the morning peak period at 10am.

"Traffic signal specialists will be on site and monitoring the new installations to ensure that they operate efficiently.

"We want to thank road users for their patience and cooperation."

To make sure the community, businesses and stakeholders are fully aware of the light switch on, signing has been put in place at the roundabout, with the council also writing to residents and businesses.

Local bus companies have also been informed.

Mr Dewar discussed why the change is needed: "These road improvements have been necessary to allow new development around the city.

"The planned growth in Dunfermline, which includes 8,000 new homes, four new primary schools and development of employment land in the coming years, means we needed to act now to ensure future traffic can continue to move freely around the city.

"As well as helping traffic flow these measures will improve access for pedestrians as additional pedestrian crossings have been installed as part of the works."
