Police believe that the fire behind Dunfermline’s Pets at Home store may have been caused intentionally.

The blaze caused damage to the unit’s air conditioning system, which led to animals being evacuated.

When asked by the Press about the investigation, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At this time is is suspected that the fire may be willful."

CCTV images are understood to be under review.

The fire, which happened in a skip behind Halbeath Retail Park, caused damage to the air conditioning system, meaning all animals had to be evacuated from Pets at Home.

One store worker said: “I think it just baffles all of us that work in the store, that someone would do this.

“It definitely feels like a Monday morning, put it that way. We’re more thankful that the pets are ok and there’s no damage physically inside the store.

“Everything’s kind of up in the air at the minute, but we’re just trying to manage everything in the shop as well as we can.”

“We have regulations that the pets need to be in a certain temperature. It’s more of a precaution because it’s meant to get colder at this time of year.

The shop is open and trading as normal, apart from the lack of animals.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 7.08pm on Sunday, 17 November to reports of a skip on fire at Halbeath Retail Park in Dunfermline, Fife.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene with firefighters extinguishing the fire.

"There were no casualties, and crews ensured the area was safe before leaving the scene.”
