RECORD breakers from across the nation are being recognised today (Thursday) as part of annual Guinness World Records Day.

First held in 2004, the day is a celebration that has inspired some iconic record-breaking achievements.

Dunfermline and West Fife has had some world record attempts which we have looked back on to mark the special day.

In April 2012, Rosyth guinea pig Truffles bagged his place in history with an extra-impressive feat.

The pet, owned by Chloe Macari, who was 13 at the time, cleared a gap of 48cm, beating his own record of 30cm then 40 cm which had been achieved earlier in the same year.

That night she set up shoeboxes in the family living room to see if Truffles and his best pal, Nibbles, owned by sister Nicole (14), could jump between them, using a piece of cucumber as bait.

While Nibbles refused to bite, Truffles became quite the expert.

Her mum explained: "He jumped no problem at all.

"So she kept moving the shoeboxes and got him to jump further and further each time until he reached 26 centimetres. The previous record was 20.5 centimetres.

"Eventually, she got him up to 30 centimetres and that's when she emailed the Guinness Book of Records."

Chloe added: "I couldn't believe it when he broke the world record, Nicole and I are so proud of him.

"He is an amazing guinea pig and we have had a fantastic time."

Another world record West Fife can be proud of is the Queensferry Crossing's record of the 'Longest free-standing balanced cantilever'.

The longest pair of free-standing balanced cantilevers measures 643.9 m (2,112 ft 6.3 in) and was built by Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors (UK) during the construction of the Queensferry Crossing over the River Forth Estuary, as measured on 28 September 2016.

The central tower cantilever was built during the construction of the bridge and joined with the north and south tower sections to complete the bridge.

Not quite as successful was Dunfermline man James Boyd who failed one effort to make the famous book on national television.

He appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 and viewers of the show watched on as he tried to break the Guinness World Record for scoffing Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

He was booed off stage by a 2500-strong audience at the Clyde Auditorium during his attempt to swallow as many Ferrero Rocher chocolates as he could in 60 seconds.

Judges Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden gave him three 'X's after he only managed to eat four - the world record currently stands at seven.

In 2019 he then set his sights on breaking the record for the longest line of balloons popped by a laser, but again failed to make the books.
