A DUNFERMLINE councillor has said that Fife Council need to review what is going on in their tips in order to tackle fly-tipping.
After spotting a pile of fly-tipped waste on Kinsgeat Road, Cllr Gavin Ellis for Dunfermline North has said that the only way to fix the issue is through education and the local authority reviewing their recycling centre policies.
He told the Press: "It’s the sort of stuff that could be taken to the tip and I've always said if you’ve got the vehicle to take it and dump it there then you’ve got the vehicle to take it into the tip.
"It more seems to be that sort of back route along the tips, the Bowers Hall area, Kingseat Road, further up as you head into Kingseat and the back road into Cowdenbeath. It seems to be that route, but sporadic patches of it.
"It is difficult for Safer Communities officers to deal with it if there is no evidence or any witnesses.
"It doesn't rely so much on technology and cameras, it is more the education side of things along with, we really do need to be reviewing what goes on at the tip. For example, other local authorities accept tyres, whereas we don't. That's a massive thing because it's things like bicycle tyres or wheelbarrow tyres and these are the sort of things people want to be able to dump at the site.
"There’s no reason that we can't have a third party company like Entyre having a skip on the site that people could deposit the tyres in rather than Fife Council having to ride round, pick up fly-tipped tyres and then pay a third party to take them away for us, it’s just ludicrous."
Fife Council is asking the public to continue to report instances of fly-tipping.
Safer Communities Team Manager Dawn Jamieson added: "There's no excuse for fly-tipping, which is a blatant disregard of the law and of our outdoor environment. No one wants to see rubbish dumped, and it has a direct impact on the condition of our roads, parks, wildlife and communities. We would encourage anyone witnessing incidences of illegal dumping to report it immediately, with as much information as possible.
"We're grateful to the people of Fife for reporting fly-tipping and urge them to keep doing so using our online form at www.fife.gov.uk/flytipping"
