YOUNG performers from The Dance School of Scotland are getting to return to the stage at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal for the first time in three years.

The steps have been learned, the costumes have been boxed and, as the talented youngsters enter their final days of rehearsals, artistic director of dance Kenny Burke feels confident that this year’s showcase will be one to remember.

He said: “The children are unbelievably excited.

“Our first to third years have never done a live performance and for the older students, it’s been a long time.

“It’s a big step, but they know what’s expected of them and there’s a real buzz.”

The theme for this year’s showcase is the ‘20s Through the Centuries’ taking audiences on a journey through cultural landmarks and events from 1020 all the way to the modern digital age.

Kenny said: “There’s an awful lot to see.

“Our wardrobe is brilliant. There are costumes that mix and match with elements of the past and the future.

“It’s a really interesting theme that has allowed the children to make different connections to each time period that they might never have considered before.

“We teach dance, but so much of the experience at the school is about education too.

“So, whether it’s through a piece of music or learning of an invention from the time, it’s opened up so many new doors in their brains.

“They’ve really run with it and it’s so exciting for them.”

Looking forward to what’s sure to be a triumphant return to live shows, Kenny added: “When I sit and watch the children perform these pieces, I burst at pride with what they do.

“You really do forget that they’re young people.

“To see them on stage in somewhere like the Theatre Royal is amazing.

“They know it’s a venue that professional companies visit so to be up there in their own right is a real thrill.

“They’re having such a great time and that comes across so clearly.

“It’s absolutely infectious.”

'20s Through the Centuries' will be performed at the Theatre Royal from June 10 to 11.

Councillor Christina Cannon, City Convener for Education, Communities and Equalities said: “It’s so exciting that the Dance School’s annual showcases are back after what has been a difficult few years for the creative industries.

“It’s such a pleasure to watch the abundance of young Scottish talent on the big stage, and it’s no surprise that these students go on to perform in the biggest and best theatres across the world – you only need to look at the impressive alumni the school has produced over the years.

“Get your tickets and don’t miss out on seeing two of the best shows in town!”
