Scotland under-19 star Smith, who joined Dunfermline from the Fife Elite Football Academy, is embarking on his second temporary move away from East End, having played for Alloa Athletic last season.
He made 14 appearances for the Wasps after moving there in January, helping them to promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.
Cowdenbeath-born Smith broke into the Pars' top team at the beginning of last season, hitting the net in a Betfred Cup meeting with Elgin City.
He started the team's first four league games and his form led to a Scotland under-19 call-up, for whom he has won five caps, scoring twice.
This season, however, he has made just one competitive Dunfermline appearance, and scored as they defeated Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Irn-Bru Cup.
Smith, who is under contract with Athletic until the summer of 2020, can be recalled in January.
Looking forward to my time @ArbroathFC ππ»ππ» https://t.co/4QGhLaQ63f
