cinch SPFL League Two: Kelty Hearts 6 Albion Rovers 1
KELTY HEARTS assistant boss Kevin McDonald hailed Jamie Barjonas as "unplayable" after his side hit Albion Rovers for six on Saturday.
The 22-year-old made his first start in seven weeks, having broken his wrist in a Scottish Cup win over Buckie Thistle, as the New Central Park side recorded their biggest win of the campaign so far.
Nathan Austin (pictured celebrating below), who hadn't found the net since grabbing a brace at Edinburgh City in October, opened the scoring after only five minutes but Corey O'Donnell pulled the visitors level shortly before the half-hour mark.
St Mirren loanee Daniel Finlayson, with his first goal for the club, regained the initiative for Kevin Thomson's unbeaten leaders before the interval, after which Austin completed a double.
Botti Biabi did likewise, with his first goals in maroon, before Barjonas rounded off the scoring with 11 minutes to go, and his performance was lauded by McDonald.
"It was nice to score goals at home," he said.
"We've been struggling to score goals at home so Saturday was a bit of a monkey off the back. We always create plenty of chances but something the manager has been saying is that we need to start taking them.
"To score six is a good result. We could've had a couple more; we had two chopped off and one of them was dubious. We had Barjo (Barjonas) back and he's a massive player for us. He was on top form and was unplayable. He showed what we've been missing in the last few weeks.
"Fash (Austin) was back on the scoresheet after a few weeks without a goal. He deserved his goals for his performance against Montrose, and Botti as well.
"The gaffer knew at the start of the season that we needed strength in depth. We let the players know that it is not just about 11 players and that they've all got their part to play. They've bought into that."
With 15 League Two matches played, Kelty have yet to lose and remain seven points clear of Forfar Athletic, who have played a game more.
After last Tuesday's rearranged game at Elgin City was called off an hour and a half before kick-off – with the team at Aviemore, having left Fife at 2pm – they are on the road again this Saturday to Stranraer, before making the trip to Annan Athletic on Boxing Day.
"We've set a (points) target for the halfway point," McDonald continued.
"If we can get to the halfway point still unbeaten, that would be a massive achievement.
"Stranraer are probably one of the better teams that have come to Kelty. Their results have been a bit of a rollercoaster, so they will be looking to find a bit of consistency. It will be a tough game, on what will probably be a heavy pitch as well."
McDonald said that Thomas O'Ware had received an injection to calm inflammation in his hamstring, with the hope that he could be back within a couple of weeks.
The defender is their only confirmed injury absentee ahead of the match at Stair Park.
In addition, McDonald said he was "a bit gutted" after Kelty's Scottish Cup tie with St Johnstone was overlooked for television coverage.
On Monday, broadcasters Premier Sports and BBC Scotland picked two ties each to beam live, with the former choosing Rangers' clash with Stirling Albion, and Celtic's trip to former Kelty boss Barry Ferguson's Alloa, while the BBC have plumped for Auchinleck Talbot against Hearts, and Hibernian's match with League One Cove Rangers.
Holders St Johnstone, who dropped to the foot of the Premiership at the weekend, will visit New Central Park over the weekend of January 22-23.
Meanwhile, Kelty boss Thomson is offering fans the chance to claim an historic piece of memorabilia in a bid to raise money for two schools local to him.
